Lord Brougham Statue

In the middle of the Allées de la Liberté reigns Lord Brougham (1778 - 1868), majestic from his pedestal. Erected in 1878 by appreciative Cannois, this statue shows him facing the sea, a rose in his hand. Born in Edinburgh and deceased in Cannes where he rests, this eminent politician was once chancellor and Peer of England, and is behind Cannes' fame.

Turned away at the Italian border in 1834 due to a cholera outbreak, he traced his steps back to Cannes and fell in love with its shores. At the time, the city had less than 4 000 inhabitants.

From then on Lord Brougham enticed aristocrats to come visit Cannes.
